Systematic study

Systematic checking of the occurrences of a word meaning “forgive”. The word « forgiv- » is an easy understanding word and its translation form the Greek to English is not problematic.

So, I am going to look for any occurrences in the whole New Testament of the expression «forgiv-» and its equivalent, to identify what is the doctrine for the forgiveness:

1. Do I have to forgive all those who harm me, without conditions, even if they don't care my forgiveness? Am I obliged to give up any reparations, any compensation for all prejudices?

OR

1. Do I have to forgive the only one who repents, who apologizes.

Stong Number definition :

The first stop for previous generations of preachers, scholars, and readers of Scripture in their study of any word in the Bible was the Strong’s Concordance.

Although word studies have advanced considerably in the 130 years since Strong’s was published, this resource still has value for those working in particular Bible versions. We’re going to look at a number of ways to use Strong’s effectively in Logos, and we’ll introduce other advanced resources and methods to further enhance your study.

Differences betewen occurrences and verses reference.

Occurences is the number wich counts each time the word is found in the scripture. In the same verse it could occure several occurrences of the word.

Verses-references is a verse which contains the word requested one or more times. In one verse referenced we can find more then one occurrences.

Grouping verses according to their signification

45 verses, among these 63 verses containing forgive-like words, many of them are speaking about the forgiveness granted by God. 45 references to God’s forgiveness.

18 verses, among these 63 verses containing forgive-like words, few of them are speaking about the forgiveness granted by a (wo)man. 18 references to Human’s forgiveness.

63 verses, gathering the 64 occurences of Forgive & forgave & forgiven & forgiveness & remission & merciful & remitted, all forgive-like words, are mainly a translation in English of the 64 occurrences of the following Greek words, found in these 63 verses:

Analysis of human forgiveness – 6 ways

As we saw above, of the 63 verses refering to "forgiveness", 18 refer to human forgiveness.

Let us now group these 18 verses, according to the meaning of each of these verses.

These 18 verses can then be arranged according to the following 6 meanings;

• I forgive = otherwise I am not forgiven by God (7-verses) Priestly Prayer (Our Father...)
• I forgive = if I am asked for forgiveness (5-verses). Doctrinal teaching made by Jesus Christ himself in a fairly long text taken up by Luke 17 and Matthew 18.
• I forgive = legal act that binds heaven (1-verse)John 20:23 a single verse that could be paralleled with Matthew 18:18 which concerns the delegation of power to judge.
• I forgive = because you forgive (2-verses)It is obvious. NIL
• I forgive = literal meaning (1-verse)In this verse Paul apologizes to a church.
• I forgive = reciprocal forgiveness (2-verses)The love of Christ, especially remarkable within the body of Christ, his Church, impels the Christian who has been harmed to seek the restoration of communion with his Christian tormentor.

7 x I forgive = otherwise I am not forgiven by God

5 of These verses do not speak with precision of the rule of forgiveness: I forgive the one who asks me for forgiveness! But these verses do not challenge this rule.

Mat 6.12-15 and Luke 11.4 are part of the priestly prayer, when Jesus Christ teaches the Apostles to pray to the Father:

Matthieu 6:9-13 Therefore pray in this way: Our Father, who is in Heaven, Hallowed be Your name. 10 Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread; 12 and forgive us our debts as we also forgive our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil. For Yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Luc 11:1-4 And it happened as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, one of His disciples said to Him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught His disciples. And He said to them, When you pray, say: Our Father, who is in Heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come, Your will be done, as in Heaven, so also on the earth. Give us day by day our daily bread, 4 and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Mark 11:25-26 talk about the effectiveness of praying in faith ON CONDITION you don't have late forgiveness!

Marc 11:22-25 And answering Jesus said to them, Have faith of God. 23 For truly I say to you that whoever shall say to this mountain, Be moved and be cast into the sea, and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that what he said shall occur, he shall have whatever he said. 24 Therefore I say to you, All things, whatever you ask, praying, believe that you shall receive them, and it will be to you. 25 And when you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive it so that also your Father in Heaven may forgive you your trespasses.

2 of These verse demand a more precise analysis. In Mark 11:26 and Luke 6:37 Jesus command us to forgive otherwise he will not forgive any of our sins. But here again, the rule of forgiveness is not challenged. Yes, we must forgive to anyone who repent toward us, it is mandatory. But when forgive or not, it is the rule precisely described by Jesus himself in Luke 17 and Matthew 18.

But we will see that as we must use the forgiveness like God use it toward anyone who repent…

5 x I forgive = if I am asked for forgiveness (5-verses).

It is Jesus Christ himself who teaches this rule.

In the preamble Jesus Christ speaks of the functioning in the Church, this is the second time in the scriptures that Jesus Christ uses the word Church, once to say that he is building it himself, a second time to explain the discipline which must reign in the Church.

If you have a problem with someone who has harmed you, don't tell anyone, not the pastor, the elders, anyone. Go to whoever harmed you and try to win your brother. See with him what's wrong, possibly ask him for forgiveness (forgive each other) if you unintentionally hurt him...

If he persists in not repenting, in not asking your forgiveness. Talk about it around you, and let the Church, that is to say the community of believers, judge the situation.

If the one who harmed you persists, do not ask for forgiveness: YOU DO NOT FORGIVE HIM! On the contrary, let him be like a stranger to you, you no longer greet him!

On this Peter asks Jesus Christ how many times he will have to forgive someone who has harmed him, that he has been reproved and who has repented...

Jesus Christ has just explained what to do if he who sins against us does not repent, he will now explain it to us by the illustration of the iniquitous servant, who asks forgiveness for his faults but does not forgive those who ask forgiveness.

Matthieu 18:15-35 But if your brother shall trespass against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. 16 But if he will not hear * you *, take one or two more with you, so that in * the * mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. 17 And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell * it * to the church. But if he neglects to hear the church, let him be to you as a heathen and a tax-collector. 18 Truly I say to you, Whatever you shall bind on earth shall occur, having been bound in Heaven; and whatever you shall loose on earth shall occur, having been loosed in Heaven. 19 Again I say to you that if two of you shall agree on earth as regarding anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them by My Father in Heaven. 20 For where two or three are gathered together in My name, there I am in their midst. 21 Then Peter came to Him and said, Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? It's cristal clear! The rule of forgiveness that we, ambassadors of God on earth, must apply is the same God applies to men.

God forgives every men who repents, every men who asks him for forgiveness.

This is the rule of forgiveness.

We are no greater than God to forgive indiscriminately, even to those who have no use for our forgiveness.

We must NOT FORGIVE those who do not ask us for forgiveness, as God does! We must FORGIVE those who ask us for forgiveness as God does!

Matthieu 18:21

Matthieu 18:21 21 Then Peter came to Him and said, Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? Until seven times?

Matthieu 18:35

Matthieu 18:35 35 So likewise shall My heavenly Father do also to you, unless each one of you from your hearts forgive his brother their trespasses.

This teaching of Jesus Christ on the rule of forgiveness, its operation is resumed without Luke 17:1-10. This is also very clear.

Jesus Christ reads again the effectiveness of the Prayer of Faith in Forgiveness.

Luc 17:1-10 And He said to the disciples, It is impossible but that offenses will come. But woe *to him* through whom they come! 2 It were better for him that a millstone were hanged around his neck and he were cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones. 3 Take heed to yourselves. If your brother trespasses against you, rebuke him. And if he repents, forgive him. 4 And if he trespasses against you seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turns again to you, saying, I repent, you shall forgive him. 5 And the apostles said to the Lord, Give us more faith. 6 And the Lord said, If you had faith as a grain of mustard seed, you might say to this sycamine tree, Be rooted up and be planted in the sea! And it would obey you. 7 But which of you who has a servant plowing or feeding will say * to him * immediately after he has come from the field, Come, recline? 8 Will * he * not say to him, Prepare something * so that * I may eat, and gird yourself and serve me until I eat and drink. And afterward you shall eat and drink. 9 * Does * he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I think not. 10 So likewise you, when you shall have done all the things commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants, for we have done what we ought to do.

But if we are to NOT FORGIVE those who do not ask us for forgiveness! How do we forgive someone with whom it is impossible to communicate, because we do not know how to reach them, because they are too far away or because they are deceased?

The answer is simple, the rule remains valid; not forgiving and leaving our justice in the hands of God who will know what to do.

We will see below that the function of forgiveness is not to free us, on the other hand God is the God of the living... the forgiveness that I grant or not has value only for the living!

1 x I forgive = legal act that binds heaven (1-verse)

The legal aspect of forgiveness is explicitly revealed here. It is related to the teaching of Jesus Christ on forgiveness in Mat 18:15-35.

Matthieu 18:15-20 But if your brother shall trespass against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. 16 But if he will not hear * you *, take one or two more with you, so that in * the * mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. 17 And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell * it * to the church. Jesus Christ clearly explains to his apostles here that there are cases where the apostles will not have to forgive. Moreover, he does not blame them for this state of affairs.

Examples of Unforgivable Forgiveness

Jesus Christ intercedes for the forgiveness of his executioners

Jesus Christ in the day of his flesh, in his humanity, subject to the divine Laws, does not directly forgive systematically, without conditions!

On the cross he does not forgive his executioners!

unforgivable sin

The Holy Spirit convicts us of sin. It is he who leads us to repentance, to recognize our misery before God, to come back from our bad ways by recognizing ourselves as sinners and asking God to forgive us our sins, our disobedience, our revolt against him.

John 16:7-13

John 16:7-13 But I tell you the truth, it is expedient for you that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Comforter will not come to you. But if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8 And when that One comes, He will convict the world concerning sin, and concerning righteousness, and concerning judgment. 9 Concerning sin, because they do not believe on Me; 9 Concerning sin, because they do not believe on Me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. 12 I have yet many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 However, when He, the Spirit of Truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth. For He shall not speak of Himself, but whatever He hears, He shall speak. And He will announce to you things to come.

The sin against the Holy Spirit is perhaps that state of heart which refuses to be led to repentance.

This is what leads us to never ask God for forgiveness.

Is unforgivable that for what forgiveness is impossible because the rules of forgiveness do not apply!
